Sweet Potatoes In My Coffee was inspired by a series of sermons delivered by Chris Surber at First Congregational Church of Peru, Illinois, where he serves as Pastor. The book teaches from key passages in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus teaches us how to live a life of abundant grace as we learn first to see God for who He is, our loving Father, and then learn how to experience, participate in, and pass on the love of our Diving Father to others as live The Grace Filled Life!

"During his earthly ministry, Jesus never shied away from a difficult question. Nowhere in the New Testament do you see Jesus saying, “Whew, gonna’ have to get back to you on that one!” The truth that Jesus reveals is that in this life anything can happen at any time. This is not because of God’s Judgment, but simply because that is the nature of the world we live in."

"The message is that I can do this because of God’s love fueling my actions to such an extent that it is as though they are His actions because it is His love working inside of us that is the well spring from which all good things flow."

Perhaps I am not alone when I say that there are times having that kind of faith is difficult for me. Perhaps I am not alone when I say that for me, faith is not a destination of absolute knowledge. Faith is a journey of longing for something more."

"A heart that is filled with judgment cannot understand the grace and compassion of Christ. In their zeal for the law, the Pharisees had abandoned its chief aim; to bring people into covenant relationship with God."

Chris Surber is Pastor of First Congregational Church of Peru, Illinois. He is a husband and the father of three boys Saint Bernard named "Happy." He is a former Marine who came to Christ as a teenager in a revival that swept through Modesto, California in the early 1990's.

He is a graduate of Liberty University, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, and he is currently earning the Doctor of Sacred Theology Degree with North Tennessee Bible Institute & Seminary. He is known as a passionate preacher and compassionate pastor.
